single serve coffee pots

We are not big coffee drinkers at my house so buying cans of coffee that can go stale or making entire pots of coffee end up being a big money waster. I finally decided to invest in a single serve coffee pot. While there are much cheaper versions we ultimately decided to go with the Keurig due to the huge selection of coffee, teas, and other hot drinks you can get for it. This is also great for our household because I am a tea drinker and my husband is the coffee drinker. Now we can both have what we want in minutes. The machine is very fast. Right now is probably the best time to get one. Kohls is giving great sales at the moment. Their sale price is $134.99 and here are some codes to get 20% off. You can also get an additonal 4% if you order it through Ebates. Plus Kohls is giving an additional $10 Kohls cash for each $50 spent, and free shipping. That comes out to a pretty good deal.  If you sign up on the Keurig  website they give you discounts every month on the K-cups which can get pretty pricey. Here are the codes for Kohls:

* 15% off jewelry 2 days only, with code SPECIAL15 (12/7)
* 20% off with code HOLLY20, CON20HH4 or
DECEMBERPYD* 15% off with coupon RTMN15Q4* 10% off with code SMS9507
* 20% off your order with
Kohl's credit card DECEMBERPYD 11/28 - 12/12
* 20% off your order with
Kohl's credit card BIGGESTSALE 12/8 - 12/11/11

Ebates is giving 4% cash back right now on Kohl's.
Update, Just got a new set of codes. One is 30% off if you have a Kohls card.
* 30% off w/Kohl's charge card GIFTS4ALL Dec 13 - 24
* 20% off w/Kohl's charge card PRESENTS4U Dec 13 - 24

I also found a refillable Kcup from Amazon you can use your own coffee with.

900 free books on Amazon Kindle

Remember when I said the Amazon Kindle was a great investment? I can't tell you how much money I have saved with all the free books I have gotten this year. Today Amazon released over 900 free books. Here is the link.  If you don't have a kindle you can still take advantage of it. You can download a free kindle ap for your phone or computer. Here is the link for that.  Not to mention Amazon just added a bonus free kindle book every month from their lending library with Amazon Prime. You can also do live streaming movies from Amazon prime as well which ends up being cheaper then Netflix. The Kindle has come down in price to as low as $79.

Freezer cooking with Freezer bags

Found these the other day. For those of you who are freezer cooking pouring liquids into freezer bags is a two person job. These things are amazing and super cheap. Got mine today! They hold the bag open for you. I can't wait to use them!

Pasta Fagioli soup for under $5

Pasta Fagioli Soup

1 15.5 can great northern beans
1lb ground beef
1 stalk celery
2 cloves garlic minced
2 10.5oz cans condensed beef broth
1 14.5oz cans whole tomatoes
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp dried majoram
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp hot pepper sauce
1 tsp dried basil
3 cups pasta cooked

Combine all ingredients in crockpot except pasta. Cook on low 8-10 hours or high 4-5 hours. Add pasta and serve.

How I made it for under $5
First of all I make my own beans. I buy them dried in bulk soak them and then freeze them in one size can portions. Cost of beans for soup about 20cents vs. about 70cents a can.
I  only used 1/2lb of ground beef I had left over from another meal I made. It will never be missed in a big pot of soup. Bought the lean ground beef on sale for $3 so my cost for soup. $1.50
I bought the beef broth at the dollar store, but of course you can always make your own for less too. Cost of broth $1
I canned the tomatoes myself from a friend who grew his own this year so those were free.
I bought the pasta at the dollar store for $1
The rest of the ingredients probably cost $1 or less. Total cost about $4.50 and will easily serve 4 people.

Free Dental for kids Saturday September 17, 2011

The City of Fresno Parks, After School, Recreation and Community Services Department in partnership with the Fresno State Bulldogs and TeamSmile will be providing your child the opportunity to receive free oral health care and instruction by local dentists and hygienists.
Who is TeamSmile:
pastedGraphic.pdfTeamSmile is a nonprofit organization that was created with the mission of organizing ever-lasting partnerships between local dentists, professional/collegiate sports teams, and dental organizations.  The goal of these partnerships is to provide life-changing dental care and instruction to children in their communities who would not have otherwise been given this opportunity.  The end result is to make children aware of how important dental care is to their health both now and into their future.
When: Saturday, September 17, 2011
Where: Fresno State University Gymnasium
Time: 9am to 3pm
What should your child expect:  Your child’s overall oral health will be assessed and dental services will be provided from cleaning to cavity filling.
Cost:  The cost of this service is free to your family.
Additional Information:  Your child may have their picture taken to be published for press releases or used for future promotional material.
For appointment times and registration phone the Ted C. Wills Community Center at (559) 621-6720.

September is National coupon month.

Here are some fun coupon facts:

- The first coupon ever issued was by Coca-Cola, in 1887, for a free glass of their refreshing beverage.
- In the first six months of 2011, consumers saved more than $2 billion using coupons. (That's all of us collectively, not each...in case you're feeling like you missed out!)
- Over 1.75 billion coupons were redeemed in the first half of 2011--a moderate 2.9% increase during the same time-frame over last year.
- The average face value of a coupon in the first six months of 2011 was $1.57--an increase of eight cents over 2010.
- 96% of consumers said they would still use coupons even if they won the lottery!

Freezer cooking day.

I am still using my cookbook like crazy, fix freeze feast for freezer cooking. Today I will be trying out the fruit smoothie recipe, and the tequila lime chicken. I am also making chicken broth from the backs of the chicken left over from the chicken and dumplings last night. I read somewhere a while back to save all the tops or stuff you cut off vegetables and to put them in the freezer. When you want to make chicken broth you just throw it all into your broth instead of using fresh vegetables. Total money saver and it works very well. Whoever thought that up was brilliant! Cucumbers were on sale 4 for .99 so I bought some yesterday. I am on the hunt for a cucumber salad recipe now. Anyone have a good one? I will post whatever recipe I find later. If you haven't tried freezer cooking, you have to try it!

August was a tough month

I didn't post the entire month of August I noted. It was a little hectic. Hopefully everyone took advantage of all the back to school sales. I was able to purchase all of my sons materials for the year for a total of $12. Thanks to my friend Lisa we used all of her son's hand me downs for school uniforms. Thanks Lisa! I also had to re-admit our older child to a program for troubled teens which accounts for my absence last month. We are very grateful to the Los Angeles Dream Center for loving our son, and wanting to help him. We are also very grateful to our friends too who were able to donate towards the admission fee. We had almost $2000 worth of repairs on our truck which wiped out our emergency fund. We have been very blessed by everyone who was able to pitch in and help out. We were also able to help out a friend who lost her home for a month while major repairs were done. This would not have been possible without our food stockpile as there was no extra money to go around. We are very grateful we planned ahead for emergencies and for the good friends who have blessed us as well. God always provides somehow even when we cannot see the solution. I have been very blessed to have steady work, and Ken always seems to get a job when the money runs out. We are almost out of money right now, but once again God blessed Ken with some work today. We need a repair on my car now, but I am confident that God will continue to bless us with the solutions. As much as you can plan for emergencies, never underestimate the power of the Lord to provide the answers as well.

Adventures in ethnic shopping

ok, so I am learning a little as I go. I discovered why some of the prices didn't match up yesterday. In little tiny print on the ad some of the stuff says on wednesday only or something like that. Got it. Must look at the ad more carefully. It is certainly challenging to buy at the meat counter too. We waited half an hour to be waited on. They didn't have one of the items either but the guy did tell my husband when it would be available to come back and get it. Some of the stuff isn't translated for you either. My english to spanish ap is coming in handy at the store. I still feel it's worth it because some of the stuff there go for amazing prices. I also love the fresh tortilla option. My kids are enjoying the fresh mexican pastries. I'm lucky I don't have to go too far out of my way since it is right down the street from my job. I'm going to keep trying. If nothing else, I'm having fun figuring it out.

Feeling discouraged

I was feeling a little discouraged today. After paying all the bills there isn't much left over so once again I was going to need to be creative with groceries. I thought to myself I am so sick of this. I am tired of making something out of nothing. Then I went out to my freezer to see what I could do to stretch the groceries a little further this week. I was pleasantly surprised to see I had carefully stored away more than enough to make the stretch. Then I was reminded to count my blessings. Why is this important? It keeps me from feeling so discouraged I make even worse decisions because I deserve better don't I? So here it is. My bills are paid and nothing is going to get turned off. I have food in the freezer and we aren't going to go hungry or have to eat rice. Ok maybe we will eat rice but that's because my husband thinks he will die if he doesn't eat it every day! I also found as I was planning another freezer cooking day that I still had all the ingredients to make PB&J breakfast cookies with my little boy. I ran out of time to make them the last time I did a freezer cooking day and I had forgotten about it. Now we have a fun, free activity today. There are always blessings in the middle of trials, you just have to remember to look for them. So I'm planning to make the most of my day today, count my blessings, and Thank God that He always provides for me. Instead of dreading it, I'm looking forward to it!

Water savers

Do you have a water meter? We have one, but they haven't started billing us yet. We bought a new front loader washer last year to save on water and efficiency, next on my list is our toilet. I'm saving now to replace it with a more efficient one. I found this today the Deluxe water ecokit for $40. They say you will save up to $288 annually with a few quick fixes. Sounds good to me! Shopping at ethnic stores

I don't know why I don't do this more often. The prices can be phenomenal compared to other stores. I was tempted to go to El Super this week, which is a mexican grocery store. They had some produce this week for an incredible price. I saw on the sale flier they have another store in Salinas. I have to wonder if they get their fresh produce from Salinas and that is how the prices are so low. So here is what I bought. 5 mangoes, 5 limes, 2 jalapenos, and 2 oranges. My price. $1.60! The only thing that was disappointing were a couple of items in the sale ad were priced differently in the store. My friend TC told me a while back about spices priced very differently at the asian market too. I'm going to try this more often. Definitely worth taking a trip. It's only a little intimidating for an american born girl who only speaks one language!

Cancel Extreme Couponing

Here is a petition to ask TLC to cancel the Extreme Couponing show. This show is not being truthful about couponing practices, and it is literally showing people using illegal methods as well. Here is the link. At the end you will be asked for a donation, you do not need to donate anything.

Low cost prescriptions for Fresno County

The county is offering discounted prescriptions for anyone who wants them. I checked a couple of our prescriptions but we still get a better deal through the CVS program and United Health Center. Might be helpful for some though. Here is the link.
