Extreme couponing

By now you may have seen the new show on TLC called Extreme Couponing. I have to admit while I knew it would be exaggerated I was really disappointed in what I consider to be a lot of sensationalism. I also found the first woman just straight up sad to watch. She is clearly ill, and her shopping looks a lot like hoarding. She cannot possibly use all that stuff before it goes bad. I'm all for saving money, and I even like stockpiling, but there are very few things I would even consider stockpiling for more than a year. In fact I take inventory at the end of each year, figure out what I have in excess and donate it. There is no reason for example to hoard a lifetime supply of toothpaste. It DOES expire. Why not donate it to the woman's shelter instead?  Some of this just looked downright greedy I'm sorry to say. It reminds me of how gamblers get a high off the win. These people clearly get the same high off the free items. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy free items too, I just don't do it to the point that I can't use it and neither can anyone else. Here is a great article on some more thoughts on the show.

The cause within you

There is a new book coming out by Matthew Barnett. I hope you check it out. I have included a link to amazon. Here is a description of the book.

Whether we realize it or not, each of us was created for a great cause—and we will never be truly fulfilled until we find and pursue it. Matthew Barnett, son of a well-known megachurch pastor, discovered his great cause when he relinquished his dream of building a big, successful church like his father’s and began listening for God’s dream for his life. Sensing that God was calling him to serve the poor and powerless of Los Angeles, Matthew founded the Dream Center, a beacon of hope for homeless families, drug addicts, abused women and children, victims of human trafficking, teen runaways, gang members, and many others whose lives were filled with brokenness.
If you are hungry for a life full of passion instead of apathy; if you are ready to use your specific gifts and abilities to make a mark on the world; if you need to be reminded that God loves you and has a plan for your life—The Cause Within You is the book that can change everything. Through his own story and the stories of others whose lives have been transformed, Matthew Barnett will lead you to the cause of your lifetime

Best black friday deal today.

I have spent an enormous amount of money recently at the dentist taking care of years worths of problems. One of which was deep cleaning to remove built up plaque. The dental hygiene specialist recommended I get a sonicare toothbrush with the UV sanitizer. Rite Aid gave me an awesome deal. They had it on their website for $124.99 but the store price was $169.99, so I asked the manager if I could buy it for the same price. He asked me to bring in proof so I did and he gave it to me at the internet price. I then used my $10 coupon from the newspaper. Rite Aid is giving a $40 rebate and sonicare is giving a $10 mail in rebate bringing my price down to $60.99. Now if that wasn't good enough I qualified for the $20 gift of savings card from Rite Aid bringing my price down to $40.99. And that's not all, there is $29.99 in savings coming from Phillips for registering the toothbrush. I suspect it will be for other Phillips products but hopefully some of them will be for replacement heads. All in all an unbelievable deal!!!!!!!

Keeping Thanksgiving affordable

According to the radio I hear the average Thanksgiving dinner will be around $40 this year. That's double what is was a few years ago. With some good planning though you should be able to do dinner for a reasonable cost. Winco has turkeys at .39 cents a pound if you spend $50 which I suspect will be the best price on turkeys. Watch for sales for your other side dishes. I have seen bags of potatoes for $1, stove top stuffing for $1 and so on. Keep it simple, don't buy premade stuff, make things ahead of time so it's not so overwhelming. I'm planning to start several days in advance. Good luck!
Oh, and here are some recipes for under $1 per person. Click here.

Who's idea was it?

Ugh! I used to at least get a couple of hours sleep after thanksgiving before I went shopping on Black Friday. This year quite a few stores are opening as early as 3am. Even Macy's announced opening at 4am. Now I'm just going to end up staying up all night! I guess the good news is I should be home by 9am and can just sleep all day!

Best Buy pre black friday sale

Best Buy has announced their own pre-Black Friday sale that will take place tomorrow and Saturday (Nov 5th-6th), a full day earlier than the Walmart sale. This year they are featuring one laptop deal along with discounts on video games and electronics. The laptop is a Gateway/eMachines 15.6" eME442-V133 Laptop w/AMD V-Series Processor, Windows 7, 2GB Memory, and a 250GB Hard Drive for $279.99. Why I love Black Friday

Black Friday, the name sets my heart racing a little. I start planning weeks in advance. Why do I get so excited. Could it be going out at 3am? Or the long lines? The crazy people? The crowds? It's really the unbelievable bargains that get me out in the middle of the night. Yes, Black Friday is a lot of work, it's crazy, crowded, and I generally freeze my butt off sitting out in the cold, but I think it's well worth it for the savings. Here are some tips to get you started.

1. Plan carefully. Figure out what you are looking for in advance and list them in priority.
2. Go over each ad carefully and read the fine print. Some deals require rebates to get the lowest price. Don't depend on Black Friday websites. Sometimes the ads change so you want to be sure before you commit to it.
3. Stay within your budget. It doesn't do you any good to put the deals on credit in order to pay far more later.
4. Research your items so you know if it's a really good buy or not.
5.  Plan to have a great time. It's crazy, but it's also a lot of fun. Once you get hooked you will do it forever. My husband went for the first time last year and he's already asking about it now.

Walmart pre black friday sale

Walmart recently announced that they will be having a huge pre-Black Friday sale this Saturday November 6th at 8:00am in-stores and online. The deals they are offering include a $50 iTunes Gift Cards for $35, a Vizio 26" M260VA Razor LED LCD HDTV for $198, and a Compaq 15.6" CQ6-109WM Laptop w/Intel Celeron Processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium for $288. The laptop is definitely on the low end, but for only $288 it's a decent value. From what we have heard, the online sale will begin before the in-store sale. Once the sale begins, we'll be sure to update this page and let you know.

Black Friday News

Thanks Black-friday.net for the following information.

We've just learned that Amazon.com will be having an early Black Friday sale each Friday leading up to Black Friday. Each sale will feature deals based on four different themes - connect, play, watch, and listen. The first sale begins today (at 12:01am Pacific time) and will run throughout the entire day. Keep in mind that when Amazon.com has an early Black Friday sale like this, the deals are amazing and products tend to sell out quickly. We suggest you keep an eye on the Amazon.com Gold Box to check for when new products will appear.

Target announced that they will be extending their Black Friday sale this year. Instead of starting online on Thanksgiving Day, they will be offering a separate 4-day sale beginning on Sunday, November 21 through the Wednesday before Black Friday which will feature more than 170 items. Then, on Thanksgiving Day, Target.com will host an online-exclusive one-day sale with deals not found in their Black Friday ad. The actual Black Friday sale will then be held on Friday and Saturday with special doorbuster deals. Also, on Black Friday, if you spend $100 before 10am, Target.com will give you a free $10 gift card.

Walmart has just kicked off their Amazing Online Specials section which is featuring a Viore 32" 720p LCD HDTV for $299.99. Right now there are 172 products in the sale. However, as products sell out, Walmart cycles in new items. As new batches of products are added, we will be sure to keep you informed.
In other sale news, Amazon.com is continuing their early Black Friday sales with a "Get Three Games for the Price of Two" sale featuring over 800 PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii video games. Also, Newegg.com is having a Black November sale where they will be releasing new deals, "Shell Shocker" items, and promotional coupon codes every day in November leading up to Black Friday. Finally, Target's Great Holiday Toy Sale begins today and it includes the same deals that you will find in the Target Toy Book.

Staying faithful

Usually, families with financial problems only recognize the symptoms, such as unpaid bills; or the consequences of the symptoms, such as repossession of property. Seldom do they identify the real underlying cause of the problem. Most symptoms of financial problems that families face today can be traced to ignoring God's financial principles as recorded in His Word.

"Now if you faithfully obey the LORD your God and are careful to follow all His commands I am giving you today, the LORD your God will put you far above all the nations of the earth" (Deuteronomy 28:1).

God designed His financial principles so we could easily understand them. He intends to free His people from financial burdens, not bind them with unattainable rules.

I have friends that think it's too scary to have a budget. They feel they will be deprived if they have a monthly spending plan to stick to. They are wonderful christians but for some reason they don't feel they can trust God with their money. That is what it comes down to is trust. God has a wonderful plan for our money and when His principles are followed they actually find freedom not deprivation. This is such a hard concept to get across. I get how difficult this is. I had the hardest time writing a budget and sticking to it. It's not easy to discipline yourself when you have the ability to instant gratification. After all I'm really the one in charge of the bank account right? I really want to do a better job with this. I have a plan that I usually stick to but every time I don't I regret it. I know better! I wish it wasn't so hard. One of the biggest reasons I started this blog was to keep me on track, to have a constant reminder to be faithful with my money. If you don't have a spending plan, start one. Don't be afraid. Then the next time you need to buy clothes you can dip into the clothing fund you have instead of not sending your utility payment. You can pay for that unexpected medical bill out of your medical fund. You can register your car out of your car fund without all your other expenses suffering for it. Trust me, God's plan works!

The power of prayer

My husband is trying to build a new business. One of the things he is doing is moving pool tables. He has been moving them off and on over the years but not very often so it's never been that big of a deal that we didn't have a truck. Whenever we needed a truck we borrowed one from a friend and just paid for the use of it. Now that he is trying to build it up not having a truck has become a big deal. We needed to move a table recently up to the Bay Area. The original plan was to rent a trailer to take it up there but we discovered at the last minute that we would not be able to do that. I started praying after that. God, I don't know how it's going to happen, only you know how it's going to happen but we need to get that table up there. My husband and I talked about how bad we needed a truck, but that we didn't want to finance it because we were committed to not accumulating more debt. Later that afternoon my husband drove by a truck for sale. It was the exact kind he needed with a long bed. He stopped and looked at it. It was perfect. He shared with the man he was wanting to sell his car so he could buy a truck. The man stated he might be interested in looking at the car if my husband was interested in a trade. After some dialogue between them that was exactly what they did. Traded the car for the truck with no money exchanged at all! God saw our need and answered our prayer. Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks the door will be opened. Matthew 7: 7-8. Never underestimate the power of prayer.

Coupon myths

Myth: Coupons aren't worth enough money to make a difference.
Truth: When you combine coupons with sales you can save an average of 40% off your bill.

Myth: Cutting out coupons takes too much time.
Truth: The average person spends about 10 minutes a week cutting and sorting coupons. Even on the large scale that I use coupons, I don't spend more than an hour a week for a average savings of $25 a week. That is just the coupon savings alone and does not count sales and rebates.

Myth: Coupons are mainly for packaged processed foods.
Truth: There are tons of fresh food coupons out there for dairy products, fruits, vegetables, meat and chicken. Not to mention I never buy non food items like toiletries, cleaning and paper products without coupons.

Myth: Coupons are limited to grocery items.
Truth: I have found coupons for prescriptions, propane, toys, blankets, canning jars, magazines, etc. You never know what you will find if you look.

Best places to find coupons. Sunday newspaper, All You magazine, coupons.com, redplum.com, smartsource.com, and lately facebook has been plentiful. Once you start looking you will find them everywhere.

Getting ready for winter

Winter is just around the corner. It's hard to imagine it I know. It barely even feels like fall. I just turned off the ac less than a week ago! It's important to get ready for winter though so you don't end up spending or losing a bunch of money later. Here are some things on my list.

1. Outdoor furniture. Clean everything off and store cushions indoors. Cover everything up. Big Lots has furiniture covers on sale right now.

2. Now is the time to aerate, seed, and fertilize the lawn.  Clean out and mulch the flowerbeds.

3. Clean out the gutters, sweep off the roof, cut the trees back away from the roof. Seal the chimney. Check roof for any damages and fix if necessary. Get a chimney sweep.

4. Program your thermostat, replace heater filters, and check insulation around windows and doors. Consider a tune-up on your heater.

5. Clean and store all above ground pool equipment. Store filter in a dry place for winter.

6. Start planning for Christmas. I know it isn't even Halloween! Now is the time though to start making your handmade gifts for Christmas so it's not so stressful during the holiday season. I'm making fruitcakes this year that have to be made way in advance anyway.  I already have Eli's costume for Halloween, and I'm ripping recipes out of magazines for Thanksgiving. It's never too soon. If you don't already have a Christmas fund, now is the time to start one. Shop now, avoid crowds and holiday markups. If you have it all done months in advance just imagine going to holiday parties and just enjoying yourself instead! Personally I am fascinated with the fruitcake process and I can't wait to get started this year to see how they turn out. Wish me luck!

Planning for home repairs

There was a great article in the Fresno Bee recently on planning for home repairs. Crown ministries address this in their class Journey to financial freedom. Let's face it, appliances break. Nothing lasts forever. Your refrigerator, washing machine, etc. all have a life span expectancy. It is recommended that you put away money every month towards the cost of replacement. This goes for appliances, roofs, flooring, etc. How do you know when it's time to replace? Consider the age of the item. Is the cost of the repair at least half the cost of replacing?  Generally, you should consider replacing if that is the case. Any appliance more than 8 years old should be considered for replacement rather than repair. Another recommendation from consumer reports is to replace if it costs less than $150. We recently replaced our roof thanks to a grant from the government. Otherwise we would have had to finance it because we never thought to put money away for this eventuality. Wish we had taken Crowns course before we bought a house!

Finding time to manage personal finances

Lets face it, taking care of our finances is time consuming. It's much easier and faster to just check the bank balance. I have talked with many of my friends who have asked me to help them do stuff that just isn't so time consuming. They don't want to spend a lot of time on it. I get that. Managing money takes time. A lot of time in fact. Since I have been at home not working I have had the time to find a lot of money. I have lowered our expenses on medical, dental, prescriptions, home insurance, and our home mortgage interest rate. That's a lot of money! God calls us to be stewards, to be accountable, and to be faithful. Matthew 25: 14-29, 2 Cor 5: 10, 1Cor 4: 1-2, and to be at financial peace. It is the blessing of the Lords that makes us rich, and He adds no sorrow to it. Proverbs 10:22. So why is it such a struggle to set aside time to manage it carefully? Larry Burkett once said that money management reveals the priorities of our hearts and our spiritual maturity. Hmmm, wonder where I fall in this? Financial bondage often occurs by hasty decisions, not counting the costs, and operating without a plan. Proverbs 21:5. So what can we do? We must start with a monthly spending plan. When I first started my financial freedom journey I wrote a spending plan. I quickly realized it had to be revised all the time. I wanted to do it once, and be done with it, but this is one of those things that take time, and constant evaluation. You must schedule time to not only manage your current finances but also make plans for the future. Being at home and not working has made me realize that I spend a lot of unnecessary money because I'm not taking enough time to take care of it. It has to be scheduled in just as the other things in my life, like meal planning, grocery shopping, cleaning, etc. In my opinion poor planning is one of the biggest issues that foster debt, but by making it a priority and setting aside time to deal with it your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3.
Here is a good article I found on finding the time to manage your finances.

Save money on Prescription Drugs

Well we checked out the prices at United Health Center on Prescriptions and I wasn't impressed except for one of the drugs, but it did motivate me to do some more checking around. Walmart, Target, and CVS have about the best programs for the uninsured. They have $4 a month prescriptions or $10 for 90 day prescriptions. They have a list online to check to see if your meds are on them. I found CVS to be the best one for me personally at a savings of what I am paying now of $124 a month! That is unbelievable! It is actually less that what we paid when we had insurance. Needless to say we will be switching immediately.

I reduced my interest rate!

Every time I thought about my mortgage I felt sick. The interest rate was terrible. I had to refinance due to a legal issue a couple of years ago right when the financial crisis hit and no one was giving a home loan. I ended up going with a private lender who charged me an insane interest rate. Having no choice due to a court order we refinanced. It actually raised my house payment about $400. Ugh! Recently I contacted the lender about this. I am presently not working and just cannot afford the payment along with trying to keep up with the necessary upkeep and repairs on the house. I stated my present position in a letter to the lender and asked them to consider lowering the interest rate. Much to my shock they agreed! They lowered it by almost  5%! Wow! That lowered the payment by $243 a month. Just imagine what we can do with that. I have often encouraged people to write letters to creditors. The worst that will happen is they will say no. There is no reason not to try. I have written many letters to creditors and every one of them has been successful. You must be completely honest. If you are untruthful you will get nothing. You must also disclose your present financial position. I once sent a list of current debts vs current income. I got a creditor to stop collecting interest in a debt to allow me to pay it off. This method has always been 100% successful for me with prayer, total honesty, and complete disclosure. Come on, what can it hurt to try!

Emergencies

I started Dave Ramseys class the other night, Financial Peace University. The first class is about emergency savings. It is recommended you have a minimum $1000 in savings. We started doing this years ago. We opened a money market account and started having automatic withdrawals every month for our fund. One of the things Dave says in his teachings is that you will find when you have that fund you quit having emergencies. How true that is. Just recently our washer broke down and we needed a new one. Ours was almost 20 years old and the part alone was like $150. It just so happened the state was doing their rebates along with pg&e, and the city. We ended up paying a little less than half of the cost for that washer with the sale and rebates. The best news is we did not have to put it on credit, we were able to pay cash. By paying cash we avoided financing charges, and we were able to take advantage of a great deal. Once upon a time this would have been an emergency. There would have been no money to handle this and wait for the rebates but thanks to our emergency fund we were able to do this without it causing a financial crisis. The same thing has been true for car repairs most of the time. It doesn't always take care of everything, but it sure does handle most of lifes little emergencies. I can tell you right now I don't miss those financial crisis at all! If you don't already have an emergency fund, start one right away. Start putting money away no matter how small amount you can afford. Have yard sales, sell off unused items, do a little over time. Whatever you can do to get that fund going. Before you know it you will have your emergency fund and quit having emergencies!

medical update

I have tried out the United Health Center system recently. They have a program where they see people on a sliding scale. Care includes, medical, labs, prescriptions, xrays, and dental. I applied for the sliding scale program which I found to be quite a process. Because I have children under 18, I was first required to apply for medi-cal. After waiting for 2 hours I was told we did qualify with a share of cost of about 2,000 a month. I started laughing when she told me that. I can purchase individual insurance for my entire family for about half of that! After getting the denial letter from her applying for the sliding scale program was easy after that. I qualify for services with a $30 co-pay per visit. This includes any lab work ordered during your visit. You can have it done on site at certain facilities or go to any Quest lab with your doctors order and UHC label. They bill them directly. I waited about an hour before I saw the doctor but I have done that plenty of times with highly paid insurance doctors. This doctor spent over an hour with me! I don't think anyone has ever done that. I was very impressed with the care I received. The down side to this is that they do not have any clinics in Fresno. The closest places are in Sanger, Parlier, or Kerman. Sanger has only medical services available, but Kerman or Parlier does everything. You can get your prescriptions there as well with a 70% discount off regular fees. I have an appointment there to see a dentist. I can't tell you how badly I have needed to get dental care done and just could not figure out how to do all I needed without paying what it would cost me to buy a new car! I never thought I'd be excited to go to the dentist but I am. Part of my anxiety of seeing a dentist has always been what it was going to cost. I just feel relieved to finally take care of some problems I have put off for a while. I'm looking forward to giving my next report.

medical/dental savings

I am continuing on my quest to find affordable medical/dental health care. Here are some new things I discovered recently. Remember when we went to the dental school at UCSF? We got a price quote of $800 to pull 3 teeth. I thought that didn't sound too bad. My husband put off doing it until recently. He recently was in such pain it became an emergency. Since it was an emergency we decided to try to figure out how to do it here. First I had him call the local UCSF dental clinic. They told us they have no relationship with the dental school and would not take his xrays that were already done. Seriously! I have to say that just floored me. Then we called the Poverello house which I heard will pull teeth for free. Their services are very limited and they require you to call every day at 1pm to find out if they have a dentist available that day. They didn't the day my husband needed it so that was out. I remembered my friend had her tooth pulled at a clinic down the street from my house for $100. That sounded good to me. We called the Tower dental clinic and they agreed to see my husband and use his own xrays. Sounded good to me. They quoted us $370 for all 3 teeth. Well that was considerably less than the $800 the dental school quoted us. It turned out to be $520 since they ran into a problem pulling the wisdom tooth but still. almost a $300 savings without the expense of the drive. I recently found out that there are two local programs that you can use on a sliding scale for a doctor. Clinica Sierra Vista and United Health Centers. It says on the internet United Health does dental as well. I'm going to check that out asap. There have also been major changes to healthcare coverage so you might try checking out this sitewww.coverageforall.org  I recently was told by my doctor to get some lab tests. I started calling around to see what the charge would be and if I could get a discount for cash. You would not believe the price differences so it really pays to call around. I haven't figured it out yet, other than to determine that community hospital is charging way too much money. They wanted double the amount the independent lab wanted  to do the test and only give a mere 10% for cash. Astounding considering the complaints they have of not getting enough reimbursement from the state from medi-cal or for the indigents from the county. Here they have a cash paying customer and they want to charge me double? All I can say is wow! I have a couple more calls to make and then I will post who was the cheapest.

Free Movie Tickets

There is a new subscription service for movies. It's called Weekly Cinema. It's a subscription service for movie tickets. If you join now, you get a free ticket. You'll pay $14.95 for four tickets! Each month after, you'll receive 3 tickets for $14.99. You can see any movie that accepts Fandango with these tickets, including 3-D. After subscribing, you'll receive coupon codes that you can redeem at Fandango for up to $15 per ticket. You can cancel at any time. The tickets arrive at the beginning of the month. Check to see which theaters in your area accept Fandango tickets. If you go to the movies once a month, this is a great deal. I don't go that often but that is because it's so expensive. Seriously considering this one. I love going to the movie theater, but hate the expense.

Grocery challenge

I am now 3 weeks in to the grocery challenge. It has been much harder than I thought it would be. The money part was easy. I can do it with my eyes closed. Keeping it healthy and creative has been very challenging. The biggest challenge I have found is when the day goes badly I am not prepared. My husband has worked a lot lately and so have I, making it very difficult to get dinner on the table in a timely manner. One thing I have definitely learned about myself is that I tend to rely on takeout during emergencies rather than my own groceries. I could still get dinner on the table quick and easy using unhealthy foods, but healthy is another thing. Healthy takes time and planning. I need to figure out how to be able to throw something healthy together in a hurry. I can pull fish sticks out of the freezer no problem. One lady said she puts leftovers into single serving portions to make her own frozen dinners. I have the freezer space so it is a possibility. Not sure what to use to freeze them with though. I'll have to think about that one. To me, healthy is fresh ingredients. Something that is difficult to stockpile. I'm going to research this a little today. I'll let you know the results.

The California Housing Finance Agency announced Wednesday that it will spend $420 million to trim individual mortgages by up to $50,000. Lenders will be asked to match the amount, a deal that could make thousands of mortgages newly affordable.

The program, launching Nov. 1, will be run on a first-come, first-served basis, said Evan Gerberding, marketing manager for the agency's "Keep Your Home" initiative.

"Unfortunately, there will likely be more demand than funding," she said.

Specifics on the selection process are still in the works. But the state will exclusively fund applicants from low- to moderate-income households. In Sacramento, for example, that's expected to mean people earning less than $68,000 a year. Borrowers will have to be delinquent or in imminent danger of defaulting, but have adequate income to continue paying after getting the help.

Gerberding advised people to keep checking the Keep Your Home website for applicant criteria to be posted later. She said people struggling to make payments shouldn't wait for the program to start, but should contact lenders and loan counselors now.

Thousands of Californians who meet the income guidelines will want in, but one fact will block many.

"This is to help people with purchase loans," Gerberding said Wednesday.

That rules out borrowers whose troubles began with cash-out refinances when their homes were worth more than now. Gerberding said exceptions may be made for people who refinanced to get lower interest rates. The program also requires that homeowners live in the house they mortgaged.

For years, federal and state governments have rolled out programs to stimulate loan modifications, and most have proved disappointing. California's new program is one of the first large-scale attempts at wholesale "principal writedowns," where loans are shrunk to more closely match today's home values.

"We think it's encouraging that they took on principal reduction in the way that they did, devoting most of the resources to it," said Kevin Stein, associate director of the California Reinvestment Coalition.

The low-income advocacy group has campaigned for principal reductions since 2007.

"That's the real need in California, to address the negative equity of borrowers being underwater," Stein said.

The California Housing Finance Agency, the state's affordable housing bank, estimates it will help 40,000 or more households avoid foreclosure with principal writedowns and other plans unveiled Wednesday. In all, the agency received $700 million for the relief programs, part of a $1.5 billion federal initiative to curb foreclosures in the hardest-hit housing crash states.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger pledged to work with the agency "to ensure that these programs are implemented in a way that assists the greatest number of Californians."

"We anticipate offering this over the next three years," Gerberding said.

The agency will also spend $129 million providing up to $15,000 to help people catch up with late payments.

An additional $64 million will provide the unemployed up to $1,500 a month to pay the mortgage for six months.

Finally, homeowners will receive up to $5,000 to move when they cannot afford the mortgage under any circumstances.

In all, the program will steer a maximum of $50,000 to qualifying households to avert foreclosures.

The agency manager said there is no geographical quota. But help will roll first to hardest-hit counties, including much of the Central Valley.

In Sacramento, Placer, Yolo and El Dorado counties, 12 percent of mortgages are seriously delinquent or in the foreclosure process. And nearly half the region's mortgaged households owe more than the house is worth, according to housing industry tracker CoreLogic.

"There are thousands who could benefit," said Pam Canada, executive director of Sacramento nonprofit loan counselor NeighborWorks Homeownership Center.

The California Housing Finance Agency hopes banks will match the $700 million.

"We're asking lenders to come to the table with us on this," Gerberding said. "We can't force them to do that. But many of them have indicated they are happy to do that," she said.

costs are estimated at about $52 million - 7.5 percent of the funding.

struggling

I started the All You Grocery Challenge this week. I have to keep my spending to $100 a week or less on groceries, eat healthy foods, and be creative. The money part is easy, the other stuff a little more difficult. It was made more difficult today by me coming home to no dinner cooked by my husband, and me getting home at 8pm. Well what's a girl to do? Fortunately I found some leftovers in the back of the fridge from the healthy dinner I made a couple of nights ago. What a relief! The last thing I wanted to do was order chinese! I feel like I'm struggling and I thought this would be no big deal. Just goes to show that even though you are good with your grocery budget you can still have issues if you are unprepared. I can always pull stuff out of my stockpile and cook something, but not necessarily quickly. I am thinking I need to do some freezer meals so I don't have this problem in the future leading to expensive take-out.

Stop impulse buying

Use the HALT Method to Stop Impulse Buying

No matter how frugal we are, the urge to buy has the ability to creep up on any of us. Curbing this urge can be difficult, even to the most logical of people. It turns out, however, that logic may be precisely the thing that can save us. Giving in to your emotions, when they surround an object, can lead to a whole lot of unnecessary spending.

What is the HALT method?

HALT is an acronym for Hungry, Angry, Lonely and Tired. These four things can be main contributing factors in your desire to make an impulse purchase. Here's how you can use HALT the next time you feel the urge creeping up.

If I feel the urge to buy something outside of my budget, the first thing I think is, "When was the last time I ate?" If you're hungry, eat something. If you're angry, let it out to a friend. If you're lonely, reconnect with your people. Make a call. Or walk to your neighbor's. Take a nap if you're tired. If you address basic needs first, you will be less apt to use your wallet.

So by slowing down and replenishing your actual desires, you may be able to reassess your actual need for those sexy sandals or a fancy coffee shop latte.

How do you curb the urge to splurge?

Check out Moolanomy's full article over at How to Stop Impulse Buying!

Lowering the cost of chiildbirth

It is well known around the natural childbirth experts that out of hospital births whether in a birth center or at home cost a lot less with no compromise in safety. In fact the safest place to have a baby is at home, not in a hospital as popularly believed. Here is a great video on the savings that could be gained by removing low risk women from the hospital to have a baby. It's very compelling.

There are 4.3 million births a year in the U.S.
Average cost for home birth is about $2,400
Average cost of birth center births is $5,300
Average cost of hospital births is $8,500
About 1% of the population give birth at home
If 5% of the population gave birth at home the savings would be:
1.304 billion at home
If another 5% gave birth in a birth center the savings would be:
675 million at a birth center

When prenatal care is provided by Certified Professional midwives, the incidence of low birth weight babies(costing an additional $15,100)  go from 2.4% to 1.1%  which is a savings of 84 million dollars.

Certified Professional Midwives provide competion which helps drive the cost down to the consumer. The average savings of the competition should drive the cost down about 10% bringing a savings of 3.2 billion a year.

Cesareans add about $5,300 to the cost of a birth.
The national average is 31.8%
19% to low risk women in the hospital
3.7% of home births
4.4% of birth center births.
If there is an additional 5% of people giving birth at home and an additional 5% giving birth in birth centers the savings would be $341 million dollars annually.

If the cesarean rate were reduced to 15% which is the current World Health Organizations recommendation the savings would be $3.5 billion annually.

If all of the about recommendations are taking it will result in a cumulative savings of 9.104 billion annually.

Here is a link to the above info.

The Great American Campout

Spend a Night Under the Stars

The Great American Backyard Campout, June 26, 2010

National Wildlife Federation's Great American Backyard Campout is the ideal solution for today’s indoor kids who only spend a fraction of their day outdoors. Plus it is time to recapture an essential part of childhood--outdoor play.

Join in the fun with families, friends and communities for the sixth annual Great American Backyard Campout on June 26. National Wildlife Federation encourages parents and kids alike to trade their website for a campsite and screen time for green time to experience a night under the stars with Mother Nature.

In the last two decades, childhood has literally moved indoors with kids spending almost eight hours per day in front of electronic media. Simply put, the nature of childhood has changed, and there isn’t much nature in it. Doesn't leave much time to catch a firefly, does it?

Studies show that outdoor time helps children grow lean and strong, enhances creativity and attention spans, decreases aggression, and boosts classroom performance. Bottom line--healthier, happier kids.

A signature fund-raising event for the National Wildlife Federation's Be Out There movement, the Great American Backyard Campout will let kids explore a whole other world right in their own backyard, at a neighborhood-hosted campout, or at large community campouts.

When camper's register on National Wildlife Federation’s website, they'll get helpful information to make their camping experience a memorable one. There are also easy-to-use campout recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, campfire songs and games, nature activities and more.

entertaining on the cheap

I had planned a couple of weeks ago to have some friends over for memorial day weekend. After the Vet ER visit funds are low, but I'm determined to have some fun anyway. I checked my stockpiles and this is what I found. Lots of fresh spinach I received at a food bank giveaway that I was working at. Mandarin oranges out of the stockpiles. Makes a nice salad. Some hamburger patties and hamburger buns. Bought some hotdogs at Food Max for .39cents and buns for 99cents. 2 bags of potatoes from the food bank. Bacon in the freezer. Decided to make twice baked potatoes. Some tea bags to make tea with. So I have plenty of stuff to make dinner with and I spent less than $3 to entertain. All the rest came out of my stockpiles. How awesome is that? I love that God puts challenges in front of me so He can see what I will do with it. Keep building my character God!
