College
According to the newspaper when the economy is bad, people entering college goes up. I guess that is true because I am currently taking a class right now to complete my degree. College can be free or really cheap. Almost everyone qualifies for the Board of Governors grant or the Pell Grant making tuition free at city college. My money saving technique for books almost always works, unless the instructor has written their own book for the course. I go to the college as soon as the book list is out and get the isbn number inside the textbook, then I contact the instructor and ask if the previous years addition will be ok. There are very little changes from year to year generally so you aren't missing much. You can buy the previous years additon used off the internet for practically nothing making your investment very little. If you ever need anything from the newest additon you can always go to the library at the college and look it up. Of course you can always just use the library book althogether and pay nothing. You could also take the class with someone buy one book and split the cost. You could even do something fun like take a swimming class. So far I have never taken a class for pleasure but you know what, the swimming class would cost me nothing compared to my gym membership that I pay $35 a month for. Wow, that's a lot of money per year I could be saving, not to mention you kind of have to show up if it's a class! Shhh. Don't tell my husband!

I purchase very few of my school books at full price. I do the same things you mentioned. Usually, I borrow (library or friend) or purchase used (amazon.com or half.com). Even with shipping costs, purchasing used online is loads cheaper. Some books are $0.01 + $3.99 S&H.
Used books also make great Christmas gifts, when thoughtfully selected for the rabid readers (and thrift store junkies) among us.
I love used books, even more than new ones (and that's saying something). I get a sense of connection to the other people who have read it, and I feel good about reducing consumption (which is why I select booksellers in CA, OR, or NV when possible).
Chris and I take PE classes at school to save money and mostly to keep motivated to participate in sport. We've done yoga, pilates, and jogging. This semester we are taking a billiards class though. It's kind of our date night. We are doing something kinda fun together at least, something we wouldn't normally do with the busyness of family, schoolwork, work, etc. School is great.
Hey Kim, that class is actually taught by a friend of mine. I played pool with him for years. Since you like pool maybe you and Chris can come visit. We have our own pool table in the garage. It will give you a chance to test what you learned!
Ha ha. We are no good, but we have learned some things. We'd love to play outside of class sometime. Just don't expect any competition. The teacher is pretty nice, but also a little arrogant. (But I guess you can be when you're that good.) I like him though.
Kim, I think that is just his personality. Heehee! He is not a bad player but if I remember right I beat him the last time we played. I like him a lot though. I have not seen him in several years since I quit playing tournaments. You can play with ken and I anytime!
We don't have P.E. at the seminary, unless you consider eating a sport ;)
