entertaining on the cheap
I had planned a couple of weeks ago to have some friends over for memorial day weekend. After the Vet ER visit funds are low, but I'm determined to have some fun anyway. I checked my stockpiles and this is what I found. Lots of fresh spinach I received at a food bank giveaway that I was working at. Mandarin oranges out of the stockpiles. Makes a nice salad. Some hamburger patties and hamburger buns. Bought some hotdogs at Food Max for .39cents and buns for 99cents. 2 bags of potatoes from the food bank. Bacon in the freezer. Decided to make twice baked potatoes. Some tea bags to make tea with. So I have plenty of stuff to make dinner with and I spent less than $3 to entertain. All the rest came out of my stockpiles. How awesome is that? I love that God puts challenges in front of me so He can see what I will do with it. Keep building my character God!

Sonic B1G1F shake
(May 17, 2010) Sonic Corp. is launching its reformulated soft-serve ice cream with a buy-one-get-one free shake promotion. The 3,500-unit drive-in chain said the shake promotion, which allows the free shake anytime and not just at purchase, will last through June 27. In addition, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Sonic is offering single-topping sundaes for 99 cents after 8 p.m.
The new formula, billed as “Real Ice Cream,” was announced earlier this year as one of several initiatives that Sonic has planned to reverse sliding sales.
“Strengthening our frozen lineup with the addition of Real Ice Cream is just one more way Sonic adapts our menu to appeal to customers' tastes and preferences,” Dominic Losacco, vice president of marketing for Sonic, said in a statement Monday.
Sonic said it was also improving many of its Frozen Favorites dessert toppings, including chocolate, hot fudge, caramel and pineapple, by reducing or removing high fructose corn syrup.

Free child protection tattoo
This is totally cool. It's a tattoo you can put your cell phone number when you take your child to a crowded place in case they get lost. I am totally going to use it at the water park! http://www.protectionone.com/kids/

Can organic be affordable?
Well maybe you can't do all organic, but you CAN do organic if you use your money wisely.
1. Buy organic for the top 12 or in other words, the dirty dozen. Here they are:
1. Peaches
2. Apples
3. Bell peppers
4. celery
5. nectarines
6. strawberries
7. cherries
8. kale
9. lettuce
10. grapes
11. carrots
12. pears
Here are the clean and safe to choose conventional
1. onions
2. avocados
3. sweet corn (frozen)
4. pineapples
5. mangoes
6. asparagus
7. sweet peas
8. kiwis
9. cabbage
10. eggplant
11. papayas
12. watermelons
13. broccoli
14. tomatoes
15. sweet potatoes.
Cook from scratch. Buy from the bulk bins instead.
2. If you buy organic meat and dairy, cut down on your consumption. Plan to eat only once or twice a week.
3. Use coupons. There are great coupons on the internet. Also try contacting the companies directly. They often will send you stuff. One great websits is http://www.mambosprouts.com/
4. Find a local co-op
5. Have produce delivered. One of my favorites is Farmer and the Dale. You get to pick what you want each week and they will deliver to your house. http://www.farmerandthedale.com/
6. Buy directly from the source. Go to farmers markets or to the farm itself.
7. Buy frozen organics when they are on sale and use them in the off season.
8. Start your own garden. Even if you don't have space to plant a whole garden you can always grow a little in some big tubs. Those laundry tubs are great.
9. Buy the house brand.
10. Check out warehouse clubs or better yet the dollar store. I have often found awesome organic bargains there.

Energy Alerts from PG&E
Coming Soon: Energy Alerts
This summer take advantage of Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) new Energy Alerts tool, made possible by your SmartMeter™ device, to help you manage your energy use. Sign up for Energy Alerts and you’ll know when you’re moving into higher-priced tiers so you can manage your energy use and save.
Know your tiers to save with Energy Alerts.
The State of California has adopted a policy to encourage energy conservation, where utilities like PG&E charge residential customers on a tiered rate structure. Each month, all customers start at Tier 1, where energy costs the least. But as you use more electricity, you go from Tier 1 to Tier 2, and can go all the way up to Tier 5. The higher the tier, the more you’re paying for a kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity.
When you sign up for Energy Alerts, you'll get your choice of a phone call, text message (SMS), or email letting you know you're about to move into Tier 3. You'll also receive additional messages if you continue to move in to Tiers 4 and 5.
Be the first to know.

Taking advantage of what you have
As you begin to save money some of the stuff just becomes automatic. I have not been posting on this blog as often as I'd like to because quite honestly I forget about it sometimes. Saving money had become a habit instead of something I have to put lots of thought into so that's a good thing. A friend of mine recently told me she wanted something she didn't have to spend a lot of time on. My answer to this was God mentioned money management in the bible hundreds of times, so it was obviously something he knew we would spend a lot of time dealing with, so he left us many tools to help us with it. Unfortunately managing your money takes a lot of time, but as you begin to take care of it, it becomes a habit, and not something you view as time consuming. Money management reveals the priorities of our hearts and our spiritual maturity. "Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?" (Luke 16:11).
So I realized this morning as I went through my kitchen and took stock of what I have how fun saving money can be. One of the things I have been doing naturally is taking advantage of what I have. Recently Winco had a sale on pork roasts, whole chickens, tilapia, and shrimp. I have lots of it. I have been looking for new recipes for the last several weeks to get rid of it so we don't get sick of it. I have found some cool new recipes with a couple that will become new favorites. Making good use of what you have is an awesome way of not only making good use of your money, but a way of finding some new things for your family to enjoy. There are lots of recipes on the internet and they don't cost a thing! Unless you use top secret recipes. Sometimes he charges a minimal amount for some of his recipes. This website is fun for making something you would normally spend a lot of money of eating out. My favorites are taste of home, pilsbury, and betty crocker. They have these search engines that you can use to find recipes for the ingredients you have. For example I have some fresh asparagus I want to use and some shrimp so I put those in and voila, I have a new stir fry for lime shrimp and asparagus. I have lots of cans of beans too, so I'll be searching today for ways to use those. If you have any good recipes, send them my way!
