UPDATE ON SUMMER PROGRAMS

They have seriously cut the summer programs this year through the city thanks to budget cuts. Most high school pools are closed this year. Most sports programs have been canceled. I urge you to write to the Mayor as low cost/free programs to low income families are at an all time low which means more kids on the streets which is never a good thing.

Free summer movies

REG Free Family Film Festival Beginning June 2009!
When school’s out, kids around the country visit selected Regal theatres for the Free Family Film Festival. It’s a fun-filled nine weeks of movies for kids and parents. Since 1991, Regal has provided this service to the community, and best of all it’s FREE!
Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. The Free Family Film Festival is safe, lots of fun and a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer.

Tickets for our 2009 Free Family Film Festival are exclusively available at select theatres’ box office on the day of the show.

Free kid camp from Apple

Free summer workshops from Apple, click here.
This could be the best summer yet.
This summer, your kid could make a movie, create a photo slideshow, write and record a song, put on a show for everyone, and have a blast doing it all. At Apple Camp, kids learn how to do cool stuff on a Mac and discover their hidden talents along the way. Apple Camp occurs at every Apple Retail Store, and each free workshop lasts three hours. Sign up your kid today and get ready for an adventure.

Movie Workshop: Lights. Camera. Action.
Kids take the director’s chair in the Movie Workshop, where they learn how to make a movie in the time it takes to watch one. From importing and cropping video clips to adding cool special effects and transitions, kids go home as up-and-coming filmmakers with a DVD of the movie they’ve just made.

What to Bring: If you have an Apple notebook running Mac OS X, a digital camcorder, or existing footage, feel free to bring them, along with any required cables.

Music Workshop: Ready to rock?
Kids become instant rock stars in the Music Workshop. With GarageBand and a MIDI keyboard, they get to play bass, electric guitar, drums, and sing their own lyrics — even learn how to play a real instrument. Kids will also explore iTunes and see how to sync an iPod. And they’ll burn their latest hit to a CD so they can share it with adoring fans at home.

What to bring: Have your kid bring a few favorite CDs or an iPod or MP3 player to work with. Sample CDs will also be available for demonstration purposes.

Photo Workshop: Point. Shoot. Share.
The iPhoto Workshop will show kids the basics of digital photography — and then some. They’ll learn how to import photos from a digital camera and make them look even better. Organize photos by who’s in them and where they were taken. Create slideshows with music and cool photo effects. And even build their own photo web page using iWeb to show them off to the world.

What to bring: If you have an Apple notebook running Mac OS X, a digital camera, or favorite photos, feel free to bring them, along with any required cables.

Presentation Workshop: Take the stage.
Kids are the stars in the Presentation Workshop. First, they’ll create a super-slick slideshow with movies, music, photos, and charts and graphs. Then, they’ll learn how to present it all to a captivated audience. By the time this workshop is over, they’ll go home with a multi-media presentation in hand and lots of tips to wow family, friends, and everyone at school.

What to bring: If you have an Apple notebook running Mac OS X, favorite photos, videos, or music, feel free to bring them along, with any required cables.

coupon basics

Let's start with something everyone already knows about: coupons. These are not just for your mom. Smart people use coupons. You can often buy stuff for pennies with coupons vs. paying full price. It is a big myth that the time taken to use them is not cost effective. Here is how to do it.

SAVE: Clip every coupon you find for products that you use or would like to try. Forget brand loyalty. The best source is the shiny Sunday coupon supplements. If you don’t subscribe to the paper I recommend starting one. There are great deals right now particularly with the newspapers losing tons of subscribers to the internet. Also, whether you subscribe to the paper or not, have friends, relatives and/or neighbors save their papers for you. Check with your newspaper carrier to find out what happens to surplus coupon inserts. I have been known to go down to the Fresno Bee where they put their discarded papers to get the inserts if there is something really good. Also look for coupons in magazines and on specially marked packages. As you shop also watch for "peel-off" or instant coupons. Some offer significant savings, and they are very easy to use. Peel off the coupon and use it at the checkout for an instant savings. Sometimes they are inside the product itself that you will find after you open the product.
While shopping, watch for the blinky machines in the grocery store aisles. Many of these feature high value coupons, and have a “deposit” slot at the top for people to leave ones they have decided not to use. If it’s a great coupon, take the ones others have discarded. Most supermarkets now feature coupons printed out at checkout from a small box next to the register, called Catalina coupons. They are often printed in red and black, sometimes full color. They are long like a cash tape. These are tied to your purchases. Many of these are high value, and worth keeping. Especially valuable are the coupons marked good on your next shopping trip, which are not tied to a specific product but can be used on anything. They are as good as cash. At Walgreens, these catalina coupons are called Register Rewards.
What coupons should you clip? Everything you use. Toilet paper, shampoo, butter, cereal, etc. Do not stick to one brand. Almost everything is exactly the same. Believe me, I have tried just about everything on the market and I have rarely come across something that isn't extremely similar to the competitor. Clip all high value coupons too. You can use them for trading if you don't want to use them yourself for stuff you do want. More on trading later.

You can print many coupons on-line. Some stores take them, others don't. You have to ask at customer service if they take internet printables.

ORGANIZE

Now that you're collecting coupons, it's time to ORGANIZE them so that you can find the coupon you need the moment you need it. A coupon wallet is a good way to get started. You can get them from the coupon inserts in the paper from Carol Wright. I did find that her dividers were too flimsy with not enough of them so I just got dividers for a file box and relabeled them. You can always use the binder method where you get a binder with the baseball card holders to put your coupons in. I don't recommend it to start with though unless you are dedicated because you will probably just forget it at home vs. the wallet that fits in your purse. Once you are hooked you will quickly want and need to move on to the binder system though. Make sure you file right away and clean out your files monthly so it doesn't get too time consuming and a mess you won't deal with.

USING COUPONS

Start with sales. I can't stress the importance of this step enough. Match your coupons to products that are on sale!!! You save TWICE on the same product. Doing this simple step alone can save 50% on many purchases. Example: today I went to Winco and I found Kraft barbecue sauce on sale for .98 cents. I had a $1 off coupon. Total cost: FREE! Buy as many as you have coupons for and/or as many as the store will allow. Some stores have a 3 of the same coupon limit rule for example, so find out your store rules. You are only allowed to use one coupon for one item unless the coupon specifies something different. Sometimes you get lucky and find a store that doubles coupons. Right now no one in Fresno does it. Kmart has periodically done some doubles promotions but excluded Fresno for most of them. They are mainly at the Super K's. You should never pay full price for: paper towels, toilet paper, kleenex, breakfast cereals, pet food, shampoo, deodorant, cleaning aids, detergent, canned goods, and bottled products. ONLY BUY THESE ITEMS IF THEY ARE ON SALE! The worst time to buy anything is when you've run out of it. Why? Because you'll pay full price. Learn to stock up, and only buy when it is to YOUR advantage to buy. It's as good as a savings account and if done properly earns a better rate of return than any bank. One last thing. Sometimes you get coupons for buy one get one free
(B1G1F) I have successfully used a coupon for the item I am buying and the B1G1F coupon for the free item. Technically the B1G1F coupon covers the free item so there is no reason why you can't use a coupon for the item you are buying to get the free item. The only place I have issues with this is Winco. I have patiently explained it to everyone, but their darn registers are set to NOT accept it and those checkers no nothing about coupons. I had one tell me today she didn't think I could use the $1 coupon on the barbecue sauce because it was only .98 cents. I had to tell her to manually put in .98 cents. So, just be careful with B1G1F at Winco. Sometimes I'm successful and sometimes I'm not. Oh, and how you know stuff is on sale at Winco is with the color of the tag. If it's green, it's on sale.

BUYING BRAND NAMES:
If you have a choice between a brand name item and a generic and the price is the same with a coupon, buy the brand name. The reason why is that you can often get refunds on the brand name item and you won't with the generic. Save your cash tapes, and the upc codes on the products. More on refunding later.

SERVICES:
The last thing I want to mention is using a service like refundcents or thegrocerygame. They read all the ads and figure out how to match the coupons available for the best deals. It is a time saver so it's worth considering, but you can do it on your own with the sale ads too.

Big coupon day today

Today there are 4 coupon books in the paper today worth over $300 and there were 3 inserts for restaurants. If you have been lucky enough to be doing well in this economy restaurants are obviously dying for business. I loved the coupon for Chilis. They have entrees for under $7 and a coupon for $5 off two adult entrees. What a deal! Don't forget restaurant.com either. I buy those gift certificates all the time. I wait for the sales and buy $25 gift certificates for $2. There are some nice articles in the Parade section of the newspaper too on money. Tomorrow I will be posting a coupon tutorial.

Here are the freebies for the week.
Rite Aid:
Bausch and Lomb alaway eye drops $7.99 rebate for $4 profit if you have coupon.
Suave invisible deodorant $2 rebate $1.50 final price .50 or free with .50 coupon.

Free clinics

Home Depot has launched a new site that helps you find tax credit-eligible products that can help you save on home energy costs. Under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009, you can earn tax credits of up to $1,500 maximum per homeowner on energy-saving products purchased from 1/1/09 through 12/31/10. So if you really do need new windows, a water heater or other home improvement items this year, make sure to buy eligible products. Check homedepot.com and energystar.gov for details.

Recognizing how many families are struggling with job loss right now, Walgreen’s in-store Take Care clinics are offering free healthcare visits to people (and their families) who have lost their jobs since March 31st, are uninsured and can demonstrate that they are or will be collecting unemployment benefits. Certain lab tests (such as strep throat and urine cultures) are also free of charge. Visits regularly cost about $60, so take advantage of this offer. But take note—free visits are only from 11am to 3pm. Go to takecarehealth.com to learn more about the program and find a clinic near you.

Blackbeards and life lessons

I took Derrick and his friend to Blackbeards for his birthday celebration. We don't have a lot of money for a big party but I wanted to do something nice since it was a milestone birthday.(13) I searched my entertainment book for ideas. If you don't have one I highly recommend them and they are only $15 right now. You save that much with only one dinner out. There was a coupon for B1G1F for miniature golf but when I went on their website I found a nice deal. For the $10 super saver pass you get one round of miniature golf, one bumper boat ride, and one golf cart ride. For more deals click here. I fed the kids lunch and dropped them off. I took the kids early in the day so they gave them extra time on the rides. That was a bonus I hadn't planned on. Then when they played miniature golf one of them got a hole in one so they won a free slurpee that they shared. I had given them $5 to get a soda, but my son being the frugal kid that I have, he bought one large one and they shared it. They played a game that they took turns playing. Just before I picked them up someone there wasn't going to eat all the pizza they bought so they gave it to Derrick and his friend. Now I know some people may think that's terrible, but I did raise my son to be frugal and the pizza was going to be wasted anyway. For $25 my son and his friend had a wonderful afternoon that also was a good lesson on sharing and making the most of what you have. I didn't intend it that way, but what a blessing it is when the life lessons you are teaching are being passed on without you even trying.

Longs is now CVS pharmacy

I was looking at the Longs ad and I realized that it is now becoming CVS pharmacy. This is a big deal because CVS and Walgreens are pretty similar in the weekly deals they are giving. Now there are two great places to save! CVS does something called Extra Bucks which is similar to the Walgreens register rewards.

The first thing you need at CVS is the CVS card- it's red. You can pick one up at the register and use it for any deals. Buy something small or do an Extrabucks deal. In 2-3 days you'll be able to go online and fill in your personal information at this website.

There are different ways of earning Extrabucks. The one you probably have heard about is this one-every quarter (three months on the calendar- Jan to March, and then April to June) your total purchases, AFTER coupons, are multiplied by 2% and returned to you. This number is rounded down to a 25- example- if you bought $209 worth of stuff at CVS from October to

December, you would get credit for $200 times 2% ($4), and when the quarterly Extrabucks print out (second or third Sunday in January), you would receive $4 Extrabucks on the bottom of your receipt, or online.

Another way of earning quarterly Extrabucks is you can get $1 Extrabucks for every two prescriptions you have filled at CVS. This is added in with the 2% of purchases and given to you a few weeks after the quarter ends.

The best way to earn Extrabucks is through the weekly Extrabucks deals that will be described in the CVS weekly ad. Usually these deals involve some qualification like- "Buy $20 worth of a specific product or products, get $10 Extrabucks" and you can use coupons for the deal. Most of these deals are limited to one per card, but sometimes there will be unlimited deals- unlimited deals can be VERY profitable.

More on Mothers Day

You don’t have to book a table at an expensive restaurant to show Mom you care. Here are six low-cost ways to shower her with love this Sunday:

* Write her a letter telling her why you love her so much, and include your favorite memories of her—some funny, some sweet, some silly. You could even ask her siblings, friends, co-workers and neighbors to write letters explaining why they love and appreciate her, then compile them into a scrapbook.

* Make Mom’s favorite meal—even if no one else in the family likes it!

* Pack a picnic lunch and take it to the park. After you eat, take a leisurely stroll together.

* Do a chore for your mom you know she dislikes, whether it’s washing the car, unloading the dishwasher or pulling weeds.

* Go through old photos together. Recall your favorite memories, such as vacations, graduations and weddings. Gather the best pictures of you and her and compile a “Mom and Me” photo album.

KFC and El Pollo Loco

Hopefully everyone got the free chicken meal coupon for KFC the other day. Here is the bad and good news. KFC was overwhelmed with the response and is now offering rain checks that you have to mail away for. Take your coupon to the store and they will give you the form.
Here's the good news. El Pollo Loco in their bid for customers announced that they will honor the KFC coupon on mothers day only. They find it ridiculous that KFC is turning people away and that the coupon originally was not good on mothers day for some reason. Sounds good to me. I didn't want to cook on mothers day anyway!
